Champa Thakur Says Public Service Remains Her Priority in Politics.

District Congress Committee president Champa Thakur said that public service, rather than political power or position, remains her primary objective in politics. She said she is not afraid of electoral defeats and believes that setbacks provide an opportunity to learn, improve and move forward.

Thakur was speaking as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the Under-19 girls’ sports competition held at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Mandi, on Tuesday. She said her journey to her present position has been made possible by the support of her family and the people of the Sadar constituency.

Referring to the growing participation of women in public life, Thakur said former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s efforts helped create greater opportunities for women to participate in Panchayati Raj institutions. She said women today are making their mark across different sectors.

Thakur also responded to criticism and remarks made by some male political leaders regarding women and electoral defeats. She said such comments do not discourage her, adding that defeat is a part of life and should be treated as a learning experience.

Acting Principal Anil Thakur said more than 300 girls from 24 schools participated in the three-day competition. Events included kabaddi, volleyball, kho-kho, badminton and chess. Cultural activities were also held. Thakur presented prizes to the winning and runner-up teams.
