Meloni Condemns Release of Man Accused of Assaulting Police Officers.
Italian Prime Minister says early release after alleged attack on officers is “frankly unacceptable” and undermines the credibility of the State.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly condemned the release of a man accused of assaulting and injuring two police officers while they were carrying out their duties, saying that such incidents undermine the authority and credibility of the State.
Reacting to images showing two officers injured during an operation to arrest an individual, Meloni said the officers had been attacked while performing their duty and protecting public safety. According to her statement, the man accused in the incident was brought before a judge, who validated the arrest, but he was released only a few hours later.
Meloni described the episode as part of a growing number of cases in which decisions following serious attacks appear to nullify the work of police personnel who work every day to ensure the safety of citizens, often putting their own lives and physical safety at risk.
Meloni backs stronger protection for police
The Italian Prime Minister said her government would continue working to strengthen protections, powers and operational tools available to the country’s Police Forces.
She stressed that law-enforcement personnel must be able to carry out their responsibilities with adequate institutional support and protection, particularly when they face violent resistance while performing official duties.
Meloni also questioned the consequences of releasing an individual within hours of an alleged assault against officers representing the State.
“When, after behaviours of this gravity and after an assault on those who represent the State, they return free within a few hours, it is not only difficult to understand,” Meloni said, describing the situation as “frankly unacceptable.”
Says such decisions weaken State credibility
Meloni argued that cases involving alleged violence against police officers have implications beyond the individual incident. She said that when people who attack representatives of the State are released shortly after their arrest, it can weaken public confidence in the ability of institutions to enforce the law and protect those responsible for maintaining public order.
The Prime Minister reiterated her government’s commitment to supporting Italy’s police forces and strengthening the safeguards available to officers in the line of duty.
Her comments come amid an ongoing political debate in Italy over law enforcement, public security and the legal measures available to protect police officers from violence and resistance while carrying out their duties.
Meloni emphasized that protecting police personnel is also about preserving the credibility and authority of the State and ensuring that those entrusted with protecting citizens receive appropriate institutional backing.
