Gaza’s Children Face Dire Crisis as Conflict Intensifies.
Geneva:
In a chilling reflection of ongoing conflict, UNICEF reports that Gaza has become increasingly inhospitable for its one million children, with conditions worsening daily due to relentless airstrikes and military operations. The organization highlights the harrowing story of Qamar, a seven-year-old girl who suffered a foot injury during an attack on Jabalia camp. After being unable to receive timely medical care, Qamar had to undergo amputation and now lives in dire conditions, highlighting the trauma faced by countless children in the region.
As civilians are once again ordered to evacuate from northern Gaza, the situation remains dire. Deprivation is widespread, with essential supplies drastically limited; only 80 trucks of food and water have entered northern Gaza since October 2. The south is overwhelmed with displaced families, lacking adequate shelter and sanitation.
Areas like al-Mawasi, now housing hundreds of thousands in extremely cramped conditions, are under siege. Attacks on hospitals and schools have surged, further endangering the lives of children. Despite UNICEF’s efforts to provide essential services, including sanitation and nutrition support, the humanitarian crisis deepens.
UNICEF continues to call for a sustainable ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access, yet the cycle of suffering persists. Tragically, reports indicate a resurgence of diseases like polio, underscoring the urgent need for action to protect the vulnerable children of Gaza. Without immediate intervention, experts warn that the situation could lead to a tragic increase in child mortality.
