Shimla:

In a significant development for healthcare in the region, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today laid the foundation stone for the auditorium of Dr. Radhakrishnan Government Medical College, Hamirpur. This new campus, located in Jol Sapper within the Nadaun Assembly Constituency, is expected to enhance medical education and healthcare services in Himachal Pradesh.

The state government has allocated a substantial budget of Rs. 240 crore for the medical college complex, which was originally sanctioned by the UPA-2 government on March 4, 2014, following Sukhu’s request to then Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. While the previous central government allocated Rs. 180 crore, the current state administration has prioritized the project with increased funding.

During the ceremony, Sukhu emphasized the project’s importance, stating that the medical college aims to provide world-class facilities, advanced medical equipment, and highly skilled medical staff. He announced that the auditorium, which will cost Rs. 37 crore to build, is just one of several developments planned for the campus, including a café, library, and playground, with construction slated to begin within a month.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the college would not only serve patients better but also enhance the learning environment for medical students and doctors. The establishment of a state-of-the-art cancer hospital was also mentioned, pending necessary clearances.

In his address, Sukhu asserted the government’s commitment to following international standards in staffing, particularly in the gynecology department, which will feature a nurse-to-patient ratio of one nurse for every four patients. He also noted that postgraduate classes would soon commence at the college, enhancing educational offerings.

Additionally, the new campus will include essential offices for various government departments, ensuring streamlined services. Sukhu reiterated that the current government is committed to proper budget allocation for development projects and emphasized that the funding is the rightful share of the people of Himachal Pradesh from the central government.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Raghubir Singh Bali, Chairman of Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation, and several local MLAs and Congress leaders, who expressed their support for the project.

As the state looks forward to the completion of the Hamirpur Medical College by March 31, 2026, the initiative is poised to significantly bolster the region’s healthcare infrastructure and educational capabilities.
