A woman from Karnataka, separated from her family nearly two decades ago, has been joyously reunited with her loved ones, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Mandi district administration and the Karnataka government.

Sakamma, who had been living at the Bhangrotu Old Age Home in Mandi district, was reunited with her family after extensive efforts to trace her roots. The Mandi district administration facilitated her return by coordinating with the Social Welfare Department of Karnataka, which sent a three-member team from Vijayanagar district to take Sakamma back to her family.

Deputy Commissioner of Mandi, Apoorv Devgan, highlighted that the district administration, in partnership with the state government, is committed to the welfare of marginalized communities. As part of their routine inspections of old age homes and orphanages, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rohit Rathour encountered Sakamma, who faced communication barriers as she didn’t speak Hindi, complicating the tracing of her family.

With the assistance of Ravi Nandan, an IPS probationer from Karnataka, and SDM Palampur, Netra Maity, the family details were eventually uncovered. It was revealed that Sakamma’s family, who had believed her to be dead, had been unaware of her whereabouts for 20 years.

Senior Superintendent of the Karnataka Social Welfare Department, Basoraj Hemji, confirmed that Sakamma hailed from Danayakanakere village in Vijayanagar district. After years of searching, her family had assumed she was no longer alive. Her return has brought immense joy to them.

The heartfelt reunion was made possible through the efforts of the Mandi district administration, and Sakamma’s family expressed their deep gratitude for the tireless work of all involved.
