UNICEF Welcomes Ceasefire in Gaza, Urges Immediate Action to Address Humanitarian Crisis.

NEW YORK:

UNICEF has expressed strong support for the ceasefire announced recently between the conflicting parties in the Gaza Strip, describing it as a crucial step to alleviate the suffering of children and families who have endured over a year of intense violence and deprivation.

The organization highlighted the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict, which has left at least 14,500 children dead, thousands more injured, and many others displaced or separated from their families. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza remains dire, with nearly one million people forced from their homes and essential services in complete collapse.

UNICEF underscored the urgent need for unimpeded access to deliver critical aid to those in need, including food, medical care, clean water, and psychosocial support. The organization also called for the resumption of commercial trucking operations to ensure that supplies reach those affected by the crisis.

“Less than half of Gaza’s hospitals are functioning, and the risk of disease outbreaks, including polio and cholera, is a major concern,” UNICEF said in its statement. “We must act urgently to save lives and help children recover.”

With nearly 95% of schools in Gaza damaged or destroyed, UNICEF emphasized the importance of securing the safety of children to resume education and prevent further harm.

The agency urged all parties to fully adhere to the ceasefire, ensuring humanitarian aid can be delivered to all regions of Gaza. UNICEF also called for a lasting political resolution that prioritizes the well-being of current and future generations of children.

“The war in Gaza has already cost children so much,” said the UNICEF statement. “We must act now and work together for a better future for all children.”
