In a move aimed at enhancing equity and operational efficiency, the State Government has announced plans to establish a common cadre for all future faculty appointments across government medical colleges and super-specialty institutions. The decision, taken in principle, seeks to address longstanding issues related to administrative redundancies, inconsistent service conditions, and faculty shortages, particularly in newly established medical colleges.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said, currently, faculty appointments are made under a college-specific cadre system, which has led to significant disparities in recruitment processes, career progression, and overall faculty management. Under the new system, a unified structure will be introduced to standardize recruitment procedures, streamline career development opportunities, and allow for smoother inter-institutional transfers, creating a transparent and fair framework for faculty appointments.

“The common cadre system will harmonize service conditions across all government medical institutions, ensuring more efficient faculty deployment and better resource allocation. It is expected to significantly improve medical education quality by addressing inequities in career growth and fostering a merit-based promotion system. Moreover, the reform will contribute to better healthcare services, as better-managed medical colleges and institutions are likely to result in improved patient care” he remarked.

CM Sukhu expressed his commitment to strengthening both medical education and healthcare services in the state. He highlighted that the creation of the common cadre would provide a solid foundation for advancing standards in medical training and healthcare delivery across the state.
