Rekha Gupta Appointed as Delhi’s New Chief Minister, Marking BJP’s Return to Power After 26 Years.
New Delhi:
In a historic shift in Delhi’s political landscape, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi today, following a decisive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections. Gupta, a first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), was elected as the Leader of the House during a BJP legislature party meeting on Wednesday.
Gupta, 50, will take the oath of office at a grand ceremony at Ramlila Ground on Thursday afternoon. The event will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior BJP leaders, and other dignitaries. Gupta’s swearing-in will mark the BJP’s return to power in Delhi after more than 26 years, bringing an end to the decade-long rule of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led by Arvind Kejriwal.
In a formal meeting with Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, Gupta staked her claim to form the new government in the national capital. She was accompanied by prominent BJP leaders, including national vice-president Baijayant Jay Panda, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, and Delhi MPs Bansuri Swaraj, Praveen Khandelwal, and Kamaljeet Sehrawat.
Rekha Gupta’s election as the Chief Minister is a significant moment in Delhi’s political history. She becomes the fourth woman to hold the office, following in the footsteps of Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi. Notably, she will also be the only woman serving as a Chief Minister in a BJP-ruled state, as well as the fourth BJP leader to hold the position in Delhi, after Madan Lal Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma, and Sushma Swaraj.
Gupta has had an active political career prior to her appointment as Chief Minister. She served as the president of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) and was a councilor in the civic body. Her leadership of the BJP legislature party comes after the BJP’s resounding win in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, securing 48 seats out of 70, thus ending the AAP’s decade-long dominance in the city.
The upcoming swearing-in ceremony is expected to be a highly anticipated event, marking a new chapter in Delhi’s governance under the leadership of Rekha Gupta and her cabinet ministers.
