A recent cloudburst in the remote villages of Rangrik and Khurik in Spiti Valley triggered a sudden and devastating flood, causing significant destruction to property, agriculture, and local infrastructure.  Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana, who visited the flood affected villages in Spiti yesterday, stated that officials visiting the flood-affected areas have confirmed widespread damage, terming the situation “deeply distressing.”

After an on-ground assessment, MLA Rana stated that it was found that one house was completely destroyed, while five others sustained partial structural damage. In addition, approximately 50 bighas of standing crops have been wiped out by the deluge, leaving many farmers in a state of shock and financial loss. Locals described the intensity of the cloudburst as unprecedented, catching many off guard and resulting in heavy debris and silt accumulation in the area.

Swift Response and Relief Measures:
MLA Rana said that following the flood, district administration and relevant departments initiated immediate rescue and relief operations, which were closely monitored by senior officials. Authorities ensured that emergency teams reached the site promptly, helping to evacuate affected residents and begin the clearing of critical pathways.

MLA Rana stated that, who led the inspection, stated:

“We are personally monitoring the relief efforts, and I can assure the public that the response has been both swift and effective. However, much work remains to be done.”

Ongoing Restoration Work:

MLA Rana stated that among the key tasks still pending are the removal of debris from irrigation canals (kuhls), clearing of sediment from the villages, and restoration of agricultural fields. The administration has been directed to expedite these operations to minimize disruption to local livelihoods.

Compensation and Government Support:
MLA asserted that the government has pledged to provide appropriate compensation to all those affected by the disaster. In addition, a formal request has been submitted to the Chief Minister to allocate a special relief package for the Spiti Valley to support recovery and reconstruction.

The MLA emphasized the government’s commitment to its citizens:

“We stand with our people in every circumstance and will continue to make every possible effort to assist them during this difficult time.”

The incident serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of Himalayan regions to climate-related disasters, further underlining the need for improved infrastructure, early warning systems, and robust disaster management plans.
