India Stands Firm on Farmers’ Interests, Ready to Pay Heavy Price: PM Modi.

Modi sends strong message amid trade tensions with US; says no compromise on agriculture, dairy, and fisheries.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday firmly declared that India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers, dairy farmers, and fishermen—even if it means bearing a heavy personal cost. His comments come amid rising trade tensions with the United States over agricultural market access.

Trade Tensions with the US

PM Modi’s statement comes just a day after US President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, amid ongoing talks for a bilateral trade deal. The US is pushing India to reduce tariffs on products like corn, soybeans, apples, almonds, ethanol, and dairy products, but New Delhi has resisted, citing the impact on local farmers.

“Ready to Pay the Price”

Speaking at a three-day global conference marking the birth centenary of agri-scientist Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, Modi said:
“India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers, dairy farmers, and fishermen. I know I may personally have to pay a heavy price, but I am ready for it.”

He added, “Today, India is ready to stand up for its fishermen and livestock rearers.”

Honouring M.S. Swaminathan

PM Modi released a commemorative coin and postage stamp in honour of Dr. Swaminathan, lauding his role in making India self-sufficient in food production. He credited the Green Revolution for lifting millions out of hunger.

Call for Climate-Resilient Agriculture

The Prime Minister emphasized the need to develop climate-resilient and heat-tolerant crop varieties to address challenges posed by climate change. He reiterated the government’s commitment to sustainable agricultural development and food security.

Modi’s strong words send a clear message: India’s farmers are non-negotiable in any trade deal.
