A tragic accident marred the Ganesh Visarjan celebrations in Hassan, Karnataka, as a speeding lorry ran over devotees participating in a religious procession. The mishap claimed multiple lives and left over 20 people critically injured, sending shockwaves across the state.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. In an official statement, he said:
“हासन में गणेश विसर्जन के लिए जुलूस में जा रहे श्रद्धालुओं पर एक लॉरी के चढ़ जाने से कई लोगों की मौत हो गई और लगभग 20 से अधिक लोग गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गए – इस दुखद समाचार को जानकर अत्यंत दुख हुआ।
मैं प्रार्थना करता हूँ कि दिवंगत आत्माओं को शांति मिले और घायलों को जल्द से जल्द पूर्ण स्वास्थ्य लाभ हो।
मृतकों के परिवारों को सरकार की ओर से प्रति परिवार ₹5 लाख का मुआवज़ा दिया जाएगा। घायलों के इलाज का पूरा खर्च सरकार द्वारा वहन किया जाएगा।
यह अत्यंत दुखद क्षण है। आइए हम सभी इस हादसे से प्रभावित परिवारों के साथ खड़े रहें।”
The Chief Minister also assured that the state government will bear all medical expenses for the injured and that strict action will be taken against those responsible for the incident.
Prime Minister Modi Condoles Loss, Announces Ex-Gratia
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the loss of lives and extended his support to the grieving families. In a post shared by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO India) on X (formerly Twitter), he said: “The mishap in Hassan, Karnataka, is heart-rending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope those who have been injured recover at the earliest. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.”
The Prime Minister’s announcement includes financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) — Rs. 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for each injured person.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Initial reports suggest a possible brake failure, but officials are awaiting a detailed forensic and mechanical report on the lorry involved.
Emergency services and district administration acted swiftly, rushing the injured to nearby hospitals. Many are currently undergoing treatment in critical care units.
