NCL Champions Sustainability with ‘Waste to Art’ and Sanitation Drives Under Special Campaign 5.0.
Innovative sculptures, bio-toilets, and community engagement mark coal PSU’s eco-conscious initiatives.
Singrauli / New Delhi:
In alignment with the Government of India’s Special Campaign 5.0, Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), a Singrauli-based subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has emerged as a frontrunner in promoting environmental sustainability, cleanliness, and administrative efficiency.

Responding to the clarion call of the Prime Minister and under the guidance of the Ministry of Coal, NCL is undertaking wide-ranging initiatives focused on scrap disposal, record management, and cleanliness drives across its operational areas.
‘Waste to Beauty’ – Sculptures from Scrap
A highlight of NCL’s campaign is the creation of innovative art installations crafted from iron scrap generated during mining operations. As part of its “Waste to Beauty” vision, sculptures of India’s national bird – the Peacock, and the Barasingha (swamp deer) are being installed, creatively showcasing the potential of repurposed industrial waste.
These sculptures symbolize NCL’s commitment to environmental stewardship, creativity, and sustainable innovation, reflecting how waste materials can be transformed into meaningful public art that educates and inspires.
Bio-Toilets for Sanitation and Sustainability
Further reinforcing its green initiatives, NCL has installed five bio-toilets across its project sites. These eco-friendly sanitation facilities not only cater to the workforce and local communities but also promote the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
The bio-toilets are designed to have a minimal environmental footprint, ensuring hygienic waste disposal without harming the surrounding ecosystem.
Community Engagement: Waste to Art Competition
In a bid to instill environmental awareness among younger generations, NCL organized a “Waste to Art” competition at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Singrauli, on October 17.

Students displayed remarkable creativity by using recycled and scrap materials to make artistic models, sending a strong message about reuse, recycling, and sustainability. The event encouraged community-wide participation in eco-friendly practices.
Ambitious Targets Under Special Campaign 5.0
NCL’s Special Campaign 5.0 is not only about aesthetics and awareness but also about measurable impact. The company has set ambitious goals, including:
- Clean-up operations at 75 locations
- Sanitation coverage across 85,000 sq. ft.
- Disposal of 2,500 metric tonnes of scrap
- Review and weeding out of 350 physical files
- Examination of over 9,000 e-files
Through these targets, NCL is pushing for efficiency in governance, improved workspace management, and better environmental practices.
A Model for Cleaner, Greener Public Sector Units
As Special Campaign 5.0 gains momentum, NCL continues to emerge as a model PSU, effectively integrating sustainability, administrative reforms, and community engagement. With its holistic approach, the company exemplifies how industrial units can contribute to the Government’s vision of a cleaner, greener, and more efficient India.
