UK Government Moves to Scrap Two-Child Limit, PM Keir Starmer Says 4.5 Lakh Children to Be Lifted Out of Poverty.

London:

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer yesterday announced a major step towards scrapping the controversial two-child benefit limit, describing the move as a decisive action to combat child poverty and ensure equal opportunities for all children across the country.

In a statement, the Prime Minister said that the decision would lift around 450,000 children out of poverty, calling it a transformative measure for nearly half a million young lives. He emphasised that the reform would help ensure children are not forced to grow up in deprivation, struggling with cold homes or going without adequate food.

“Today we took another step towards scrapping the two-child limit,” Starmer said, adding that the policy change reflects his government’s commitment to social justice and inclusive growth. “Because of this, 450,000 children will be lifted out of poverty — that’s nearly half a million kids who won’t have to go to sleep in a cold bedroom or skip a meal.”

The Prime Minister underlined that his government is determined to leave no child behind, stating that tackling child poverty is central to its broader vision for a fairer and more compassionate Britain. He reiterated that every child deserves the best possible start in life, regardless of the circumstances they are born into.

Starmer said the move represents a clear shift in priorities, placing children and families at the heart of policymaking. “Lifting half a million children out of poverty and giving every child the best start in life is not just an economic decision — it is a moral one,” he said.

The two-child limit, introduced by a previous government, has long been criticised by charities, social policy experts and campaigners, who argued that it disproportionately affected low-income families and deepened child poverty. The latest announcement has been welcomed by advocacy groups as a significant step towards reducing inequality and improving living standards for vulnerable families.

The government is expected to outline further details and timelines related to the scrapping of the policy in the coming weeks, as part of its wider agenda to strengthen the social safety net and support working families across the UK.
