Darcha–Sarchu Road Reopened for Light Vehicles; Heavy Vehicle Movement Likely to Resume in Three Days.
Shimla:
In a major relief for travelers, tourists, and local businesses, the Darcha–Sarchu route passing through the high-altitude Baralacha-La Pass has been reopened for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) following joint efforts by the Lahaul-Spiti district administration and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, Lahaul-Spiti, Kiran Bhadana, said that despite continuous snowfall and challenging weather conditions, the administration and BRO’s 70 RCC unit worked on a war footing to restore traffic movement on the strategically important route located at an altitude of over 16,000 feet.
The Deputy Commissioner informed that if traffic movement remains smooth over the next three days, heavy vehicle operations on the route will also be resumed. She added that significant progress has been made this year in reopening both the Baralacha and Shinkula passes for vehicular traffic, calling it a major achievement for the region.
To ensure safe travel, the police department has been directed to maintain strict traffic management and continuous monitoring along the entire stretch. Authorities have also been instructed to provide immediate assistance in case of emergencies.
The reopening of the Darcha–Sarchu road is expected to provide a major boost to tourism activities in the tribal district. Every year, with the opening of the Manali–Leh highway, a large number of tourists travel through Lahaul towards Leh, benefiting local businesses including hotels, homestays, dhabas, taxi operators, and shopkeepers.
Officials stated that timely restoration of road connectivity is crucial for the economy of Lahaul-Spiti, which has a limited tourism season due to harsh climatic conditions.
Meanwhile, the District Disaster Management Authority has appealed to tourists, drivers, and the general public to check weather updates and daily travel advisories issued by the district administration before commencing their journey.
