In an effort to spread awareness against drug abuse and promote healthy recreational activities among children and youth, a kite flying competition was organised at Paddal Ground in Mandi district on Tuesday. The event was held under the chairmanship of Mayor of Mandi Municipal Corporation, Virender Bhatt, and was jointly organised by the Municipal Corporation Mandi and the Cooperative Bank.

The primary objective of the competition was to sensitise children and young people about the harmful effects of drugs, particularly synthetic drugs (Chitta), and to encourage them to stay away from substance abuse by engaging in sports and positive activities. On the occasion, Mayor Virender Bhatt administered an anti-drug pledge to all participants, reinforcing the message of building a drug-free society.

Addressing the gathering, Mayor Bhatt said that timely awareness is the most effective way to protect children from falling into drug addiction. He emphasised that sports, cultural programmes, competitions, and healthy entertainment provide a constructive direction to the youth. “When children remain actively involved in outdoor activities, showcase their talents, and stay socially connected, they naturally keep away from social evils like drug abuse,” he added.

The competition witnessed enthusiastic participation from children in both below 16 years and above 16 years age categories. This year saw an increase in participation compared to previous years, with students from nearly 10 schools taking part. More than 150 children actively participated, making the event vibrant and successful.

Winners were awarded prizes in various categories. In the below 16 years boys’ category, Adansh secured the first position, followed by Aryan in second place and Shiv Bhatiya in third. In the below 16 years girls’ category, Shruti emerged as the sole participant and won the first prize. In the above 16 years category, Anil Kumar claimed the first prize, while Abhay secured the second position.

The Mayor expressed gratitude to the city residents, social, religious, and political organisations, as well as all participants for their cooperation and support. He encouraged the youth to actively participate in such initiatives in the future to help create a healthy and drug-free society.

Among those present at the event were Municipal Councillors, Municipal Commissioner Rohit Rathour, Additional Commissioner Vijay Kumar, Assistant Engineer Naresh, Section Officer Rakesh Guleria, other officials and employees of the Municipal Corporation, along with members of various non-governmental organisations.
