Prime Minister Modi to release 17th installment of PM-KISAN scheme in Varanasi on June 18.

Today, Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, announced in a press conference the forthcoming release of the 17th installment under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, amounting to approximately Rs 20,000 crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Varanasi on June 18, 2024, to ceremonially disburse this installment to over 9.26 crore beneficiary farmers across the nation.

The event, organized by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in collaboration with the Government of Uttar Pradesh, will also witness the distribution of certificates to more than 30,000 self-help groups designated as Krishi Sakhis. Distinguished attendees will include the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, and several other ministers from the state government.

During the press briefing, Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for prioritizing agriculture and farmers’ welfare, emphasizing that agriculture remains fundamental to India’s economic framework and employment landscape. He highlighted the PM-KISAN scheme as a critical initiative aimed at supporting land-holding farmers nationwide, having disbursed over Rs 3.04 lakh crore to more than 11 crore farmers since its inception in February 2019.

Minister Chauhan underscored the significance of the upcoming event in Varanasi, noting it marks a pivotal moment in the government’s commitment to agricultural prosperity and the vision of a developed India. He outlined that beyond the financial disbursement, the occasion will include interactions with farmers across 50 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and outreach efforts by over 1.0 lakh Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies and 5.0 lakh Common Service Centres (CSCs) nationwide.

Regarding the Krishi Sakhi initiative, Minister Chauhan highlighted its role in empowering women in agriculture, citing the certification of over 34,000 Krishi Sakhis across 12 states as para-extension workers. These women, trained extensively in agricultural practices, play a crucial role in disseminating knowledge and supporting fellow farmers.

Furthermore, Minister Chauhan acknowledged the comprehensive support provided under schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, ensuring financial security to more than 4 crore farmers, and the ongoing subsidy provisions for fertilizers, totaling Rs 11 lakh crore.
