Shimla:

In a significant development for the farming and horticulture community of Lahaul-Spiti, Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament and former Himachal Pradesh Cabinet Minister Harsh Mahajan has recommended Rs. 4 lakh from his Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) fund for the renovation and restoration of an important irrigation project in the district.

The sanctioned amount has been proposed for the repair and rejuvenation of the Flow Irrigation Scheme serving farmers of Mooling, Bargul, and Shifting villages under Gram Panchayat Mooling. The project involves the restoration of the Shifting Kuhal irrigation channel, a crucial water source that supports agricultural and horticultural activities in the region.

According to the proposal submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul-Spiti, the project falls under the Keylong Development Block. The district administration has been requested to undertake the necessary technical evaluation and approval process so that renovation work can commence at the earliest.

The irrigation scheme has been a long-pending demand of local farmers and orchardists who depend heavily on a reliable water supply for cultivation in the challenging terrain of the tribal district. Once restored, the scheme is expected to significantly improve irrigation facilities, enhance water distribution efficiency, and strengthen agricultural and horticultural productivity across the beneficiary villages.

The development is being viewed as an important step toward improving rural infrastructure and supporting the livelihoods of farming communities in the region. Better irrigation facilities are expected to contribute directly to increased crop yields, improved orchard management, and greater economic stability for local residents.

Expressing gratitude for the sanction, former MLA from Lahaul and Spiti and BJP State Working Committee Member Ravi Thakur said that the approval reflects a positive response to the developmental needs of the region. He appreciated the efforts of MP Harsh Mahajan for prioritizing public welfare projects and addressing the long-standing concerns of farmers.

Ravi Thakur stated that the initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to the development of Lahaul-Spiti, the prosperity of its farmers, and the strengthening of essential infrastructure. He added that the project would play a vital role in enhancing irrigation facilities and supporting sustainable agricultural growth in the district.

Local residents and farmers have welcomed the announcement, expressing hope that the renovation work will begin soon and provide lasting benefits to the agricultural sector in one of Himachal Pradesh’s most remote regions.
