US Brokers Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Agreement, Sets Stage for Broader Peace Talks.

Washington/Jerusalem/Beirut:

In a significant diplomatic breakthrough aimed at easing tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, the United States announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to implement a ceasefire following high-level trilateral negotiations held on June 2 and 3.

The agreement emerged from the fourth round of U.S.-facilitated talks involving senior representatives from Israel and Lebanon, marking a major step toward reducing hostilities and advancing a broader framework for peace and security in the region.

According to a joint statement released by the three countries, the ceasefire will take effect on the condition that all fire by Hezbollah ceases and all Hezbollah operatives withdraw from the South Litani sector in southern Lebanon.

Pilot Security Zones Planned

As part of the agreement, Israel and Lebanon have committed to rapidly establishing pilot security zones where the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) will exercise exclusive authority. The arrangement is intended to eliminate the presence of non-state armed groups in designated areas and strengthen state control over Lebanese territory.

Officials described the move as an important confidence-building measure that could pave the way for a comprehensive peace and security agreement between the neighboring countries.

“The future of relations between Israel and Lebanon must be determined by their sovereign governments,” the statement said, emphasizing that no state or non-state actor should be allowed to dictate Lebanon’s future.

Commitment to Continued Negotiations

Both governments reaffirmed that they do not harbor hostile intentions toward one another and agreed to continue direct negotiations under U.S. mediation.

The talks will focus on building mutual trust, resolving outstanding disputes and working toward a durable agreement that addresses longstanding security concerns along the border.

Delegations also discussed a broader security framework based on previous discussions held at the Pentagon on May 29. The framework aims to guarantee the sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of both Lebanon and Israel.

A key component of the discussions involved the dismantling of non-state armed groups and preventing their re-establishment in the future.

Strong Criticism of Iran

The joint statement included a sharp condemnation of Iran’s activities in the region.

The United States, Israel and Lebanon criticized attacks attributed to Iran and accused Tehran of undermining regional stability through support for proxy groups and other forms of aggression.

The statement highlighted concerns that such activities continue to fuel instability across the Middle East and threaten efforts to achieve lasting peace.

US Reaffirms Support for Lebanese Armed Forces

The United States reiterated its commitment to supporting both governments in exercising full sovereignty over their territories.

Washington emphasized that any agreement to end hostilities must be negotiated directly between Israel and Lebanon with U.S. mediation and not through alternative channels.

The U.S. also pledged continued support for the Lebanese Armed Forces to strengthen their operational capabilities and enable effective state authority throughout Lebanon.

The statement referenced remarks by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who described Hezbollah as “an enemy of Lebanon” in addition to being an adversary of the United States and Israel.

Israel Calls for Hezbollah Disarmament

Israel reaffirmed that its long-term security depends on the disarmament of Hezbollah and the dismantling of the group’s military infrastructure across Lebanon.

Israeli officials stressed that direct negotiations under U.S. leadership remain the most effective path toward resolving bilateral disputes and achieving sustainable peace.

Lebanon Emphasizes Sovereignty and Border Respect

Lebanon, meanwhile, underscored the importance of respecting internationally recognized borders and fully implementing the cessation of hostilities.

Beirut reiterated its commitment to territorial integrity, national sovereignty and strengthening the Lebanese Armed Forces with international support.

Lebanese representatives stated that expanding the capabilities of the national military would be essential for asserting state authority across the country and ensuring long-term stability.

Next Round of Talks Scheduled

The parties agreed to reconvene both political and security negotiations during the week of June 22 with the objective of reaching a comprehensive agreement.

The United States will continue facilitating communication between the two sides until the next round of talks.

Analysts view the agreement as one of the most significant diplomatic developments between Israel and Lebanon in recent years. While substantial challenges remain, the ceasefire and planned security measures are being seen as an important step toward reducing tensions and creating conditions for a broader regional settlement.
