In a major move aimed at preserving Spiti’s rich cultural traditions and providing a platform for local talent, construction of an open cultural stage has begun at Kaza. Lahaul-Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana performed the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony on Monday, formally launching the ambitious project that is expected to become a hub for cultural activities in the tribal region.

The project, estimated to cost Rs. 1.12 crore, is being executed by the Development Block Spiti under the Himachal Pradesh Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department. The facility has been planned to promote folk arts, traditional performances, community programmes, and cultural events while creating a permanent space for celebrations and gatherings.

The foundation ceremony was conducted with Buddhist and traditional rituals led by Tenzin Lobzang Duldup, President of Key Monastery. The event was attended by local representatives, officials, Buddhist monks, residents, and community members, who welcomed the initiative as an important step towards cultural preservation.

Speaking at the ceremony, MLA Anuradha Rana highlighted the need to protect Spiti’s unique identity and traditions. She said the new cultural stage would provide local artists, youth, and cultural organisations with an opportunity to showcase folk music, dance, handicrafts, and traditional art forms.

She added that the facility would also strengthen cultural tourism by offering visitors a closer understanding of Spiti’s heritage, customs, and way of life. The MLA said the state government is committed to improving infrastructure in tribal areas while ensuring that cultural development receives due importance.

The upcoming stage is expected to host major local fairs, festivals, religious gatherings, and community events, giving fresh momentum to cultural activities in the region. It will also encourage young people to engage with their traditional roots and contribute towards safeguarding Spiti’s centuries-old heritage.

Local residents have appreciated the project, stating that the facility will provide artists with greater visibility and help preserve the region’s diverse cultural expressions for future generations.
