India Creates History with First-Ever All-Gold Haul at International Chemistry Olympiad 2026, Tops Global Medal Tally.

India scripted history at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2026 by securing four Gold medals, with every member of the Indian team finishing at the top of the world’s most prestigious chemistry competition for school students. The Olympiad was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from July 10 to July 19, 2026.
With this remarkable achievement, India registered its best-ever performance in the history of the International Chemistry Olympiad, earning its first-ever clean sweep of Gold medals. India also secured the joint first position in the overall medal tally, alongside China, Vietnam, and Individual Participants Group B (from Russia).

Biggest IChO in History
The 58th International Chemistry Olympiad was the largest edition ever conducted, attracting 363 students from 93 countries.
India’s all-Gold finish and joint top ranking underline the country’s growing stature in global scientific education and Olympiad competitions.
Highly Challenging Competition
The Olympiad consisted of rigorous theoretical and experimental examinations designed to test participants’ analytical skills, conceptual understanding, and laboratory expertise.
The theoretical examination featured nine advanced chemistry problems based on cutting-edge scientific research and real-world applications. Topics included plant extract analysis, oscillatory chemical reactions, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), uranium chemistry related to the historic Urtabulak gas fire, chiral cardiolipins, cyclocarbons and nanoscale molecular belts, catalytic nitrogen fixation for ammonia production, carbon dioxide reduction using photosensitizers, and stereochemical transformations involving synthetic cyclodextrin analogues.
The experimental examination challenged students through three laboratory-based tasks. Participants synthesized and analyzed a metal complex using qualitative analysis and complexometric titration, identified twenty biochemical mixtures using enzyme-based microscale tests, and determined the composition of acid mixtures through pH-metric titrations while studying natural and synthetic indicator solutions.
The competition demanded exceptional laboratory skills, scientific reasoning, and problem-solving abilities, making India’s all-Gold performance particularly significant.
India’s Strong Legacy at IChO
The 2026 Olympiad marked India’s 27th participation at the International Chemistry Olympiad.
Over the years, Indian students have consistently excelled on the global stage. Across all editions, India’s medal record stands at:
32% Gold medals
51% Silver medals
17% Bronze medals
During the last ten editions, India’s performance has improved even further, with 43% Gold medals and 53% Silver medals, reflecting the country’s sustained excellence in chemistry education and Olympiad training.
Appreciation for Students and Mentors
The Government of India congratulated all four Gold medallists and the entire Indian delegation for this historic achievement. Appreciation was also extended to the Chemistry Olympiad Cell of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) and the dedicated pool of teachers and mentors who trained the students during the orientation and pre-departure camps.
The National Steering Committee on Science Olympiads, participating teacher organisations, and funding agencies of the Government of India—including the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Department of Science and Technology (DST), and the Ministry of Education (MoE)—were also acknowledged for their continued support in nurturing India’s scientific talent.
