Israel Releases Five Lebanese Citizens Amid Efforts to Recover Bodies of Murdered Jewish Community Leaders.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has directed officials to intensify efforts to locate and repatriate the bodies of leaders of Lebanon’s Jewish community who were abducted and murdered by terrorist organizations in the mid-1980s, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
According to the statement, Netanyahu has been personally involved in the issue for decades. His efforts date back to his tenure as Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, reflecting the longstanding Israeli focus on recovering the remains of the Jewish community leaders and bringing them back to Israel.
The issue has gained renewed attention as part of ongoing negotiations involving Israel and Lebanon. The Prime Minister’s Office said that, in recent months, both Israeli and Lebanese authorities have conducted numerous operations aimed at locating the bodies. These efforts have included field operations and other activities on the ground.
In connection with the intensified search, Israel has decided to release five Lebanese citizens who had been detained in areas of southern Lebanon under the control of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The Prime Minister’s Office said the decision followed the completion of interrogations of the five detainees. According to Israeli authorities, the questioning determined that the individuals were civilians, were not members of a terrorist organization and had not been involved in terrorist activity.
“Following the completion of their interrogation, it became clear that they are civilians who are not members of a terrorist organization, were not engaged in terrorism, and that there is no reason to continue holding them in Israel,” the statement said.
The release comes against the backdrop of broader contacts and negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, with the recovery of the remains of the murdered Jewish community leaders emerging as a specific issue in the discussions.
Israeli officials say the search has involved cooperation and activity on both sides of the border, including efforts by Lebanon as well as Israel. The Israeli government’s decision to release the five Lebanese detainees was presented as being linked to the significant increase in activity surrounding the search.
The case dates back to the turbulent period of the mid-1980s, when Lebanon was engulfed in civil war and armed groups operated across the country. Members of Lebanon’s once-established Jewish community were among those affected by the violence and abductions carried out by militant organizations.
