Gaza’s Polio Vaccination Drive Reaches Thousands Amidst Ongoing Conflict.

Gaza:

The mass polio vaccination campaign in Gaza, launched on September 1, has begun to make a significant impact, providing critical protection to thousands of children. Wael al-Haj Mohammed’s daughter, born just after the conflict between Hamas and Israeli forces erupted last October, is among those receiving oral polio vaccinations at an UNRWA clinic in Nuseirat camp.

The campaign, which focuses on combating type II polio, is essential for families like Mohammed’s who have faced immense challenges in accessing medical care due to the ongoing conflict. Nourhan Shamalakh, a mother of three, traveled by donkey cart from Deir al-Balah to ensure her children received their vaccinations, prioritizing their health despite the difficulties.

At the UNRWA-run health center in Deir al-Balah, parents like Mohammed Rajab are waiting patiently for their children to be vaccinated, recognizing the importance of the campaign amid harsh conditions. “Given the conditions we live in and the diseases that are prevalent, vaccination is now of great importance to the survival of our children,” Rajab said.

Muhammad Abu Jayab emphasized the gravity of the polio threat, noting that the disease had been absent from Gaza for decades but has resurfaced due to the war. He sees the vaccination effort as a crucial step despite the challenging circumstances.

Louise Wateridge, UNRWA’s spokesperson, observed the vaccination process, highlighting the importance of maintaining the cold chain for vaccine doses. “Our staff is prepared to vaccinate as many children as possible over the next three days,” Wateridge said. “The humanitarian truce is holding, which is crucial for the campaign’s success. We hope to continue making progress in the coming days.”

As the campaign progresses, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and health of Gaza’s children amidst a volatile and challenging environment.
