Khelo India Initiatives Nurturing Sports Talent, Says Rakesh Jamwal.
Shimla:
BJP chief spokesperson and Sundernagar MLA Rakesh Jamwal said initiatives such as Khelo India were providing emerging sportspersons with opportunities to showcase their talent and helping Indian athletes bring laurels to the country at international competitions.
He was speaking at the closing ceremony of the SPU Inter-College Boxing and Basketball Championships 2026 (men and women), held at Maharaja Lakshman Sen Memorial College in Sundernagar. Retired principal Dr Padam Singh Guleria attended the event as the guest of honour.
Congratulating the participants, Jamwal praised their discipline, dedication and sporting spirit. He said India had immense sporting talent, but many athletes earlier lacked adequate opportunities and resources. Initiatives such as Khelo India had helped identify talent at the grassroots level and encouraged young people to pursue sports professionally.

He cited India’s performance at the Paris Olympics 2024, where Indian athletes won six medals, including a silver by Neeraj Chopra in javelin and a bronze by the men’s hockey team. Shooter Manu Bhaker also created history by winning two medals. Indian athletes further enhanced the country’s reputation by securing 29 medals at the Paris Paralympics 2024.
Highlighting Himachal Pradesh’s sporting potential, Jamwal said athletes from the state had excelled at national and international levels. He referred to the achievements of kabaddi players, including Ritu Negi, as an inspiration for young sportspersons.
He stressed the need for better sports infrastructure, trained coaches and regular competitions, particularly for talent in rural areas and smaller towns.
Jamwal said boxing and basketball helped develop discipline, teamwork, patience and confidence. He urged students to learn from both victories and defeats and remain committed to their goals.
He also appreciated the college management, organisers and coaches for successfully conducting the championship.
