BJP’s ‘Save Democracy’ Rally Reflects Double Standards, Says Congress Leader Darshan Thakur.
Shimla:
Congress leader from Mandi Darshan Thakur has criticised the BJP over its ‘Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao’ rally held in Mandi recently, accusing the party of adopting double standards on democratic principles.
Reacting to the rally led by former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, Darshan Thakur questioned the BJP’s interpretation of democracy, saying that when opposition parties raise questions, they are labelled as promoting anarchy, while rallies organised by the BJP are projected as movements to save democracy.
“When the opposition asks questions, it is called anarchy, and when the BJP takes out a rally, it is called saving democracy. What kind of double politics is this?” he asked.
Darshan Thakur said that before delivering lectures on democracy, the BJP should learn to protect the independence of democratic institutions and the voting rights of citizens.
He emphasised that democracy does not function through the power of the ruling party but through respect for the Constitution and democratic values.
“Democracy does not run on the power of the ruling party; it runs on respect for the Constitution. Only when democracy survives will the country survive,” he said.
His remarks came in response to the BJP’s rally in Mandi, where Jai Ram Thakur had accused Congress and opposition leaders of spreading misleading narratives about electoral processes.
