India’s Sharad Kumar clinched the silver medal in the Men’s High Jump T63 event at the Paris Paralympics 2024, adding another accolade to his illustrious career. This achievement further cements his status as one of India’s leading para-athletes.
Born on March 1, 1992, in Motipur, Bihar, Sharad Kumar faced significant challenges early in life due to polio. Despite being initially sidelined from sports activities, Kumar’s determination to overcome these obstacles drove him towards high jump, inspired by his brother’s achievements.
Kumar’s athletic journey began with a gold medal at the 6th Junior National Para-Athletics Championship in 2009, leading to international recognition with his debut at the 2010 Asian Para Games. His notable achievements include a bronze at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020, multiple silver medals at the World Para Athletics Championships, and golds at the Asian Para Games and Malaysia Open Para Athletics Championship.
The support from the Indian government, including financial assistance, expert coaching, and facilities like the Tau Devi Lal Stadium, has been pivotal in Kumar’s success.
