In a significant move to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections, the State Government has expanded the Dr. Y.S. Parmar Vidyarthi Rin Yojna to include overseas education. This initiative aims to empower students aspiring to pursue higher studies abroad, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder their educational aspirations.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that the scheme, launched in the 2023-24 financial year, offers educational loans at a low interest rate of just one percent to eligible Himachali students. “Our government is committed to providing quality education for all youth. With this scheme, no deserving student will be deprived of higher education due to financial constraints,” he stated, highlighting the government’s dedication to making education accessible for all.

The government has allocated Rs. 200 crore to support students under this initiative, which targets families with an annual income below Rs. four lakh. Loans can cover various educational expenses, including tuition, boarding, lodging, and books, with amounts up to Rs. 20 lakh available from scheduled banks.

To streamline the disbursement process, a corpus will be maintained at the district level, managed by the Deputy Commissioner, to ensure timely access to funds. The scheme encompasses students pursuing diploma and degree courses in fields such as engineering, medicine, management, and law, as well as those attending ITIs and polytechnics, including Ph.D. candidates.

Eligible students must have a minimum of 60 percent marks in their previous academic class and be under 28 years old at the time of admission. To address potential irregularities, a grievance redressal officer will be appointed to assist students with any concerns.

This expansion of the Yojna marks a crucial step towards enabling the youth to realize their potential and achieve their educational dreams, reinforcing the government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment.
