Pune:
The 20th edition of the Divya Kala Mela, a national fair dedicated to empowering Divyangjan, was inaugurated on Saturday in Pune by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. The event was attended by Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Virendra Kumar, and MP Shrirang Appa Barne.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting Divyangjan, the National Divyangjan Finance and Development Corporation (NDFDC) announced the sanction of loans totaling Rs. 2 crore to help Divyang entrepreneurs expand their businesses. In addition, motorized tricycles were distributed to eligible participants to enhance their mobility.
Governor Radhakrishnan commended the resilience and talent of Divyangjan, stating, “To foster inclusive development, we must celebrate and support these gifted entrepreneurs and artists. Their contributions are essential for a stronger, more inclusive India.” He also detailed the NDFDC’s financial empowerment schemes, offering loans between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 50 lakh at interest rates ranging from 4% to 9% annually, facilitating income-generating activities through partnerships with banks across India.
Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar underscored the importance of the Divya Kala Mela as a platform for marketing products made by Divyangjan. He noted that approximately 1,450 participants in previous fairs have generated over Rs. 11.5 crore in revenue, with more than Rs. 10 crore in loans sanctioned to support their entrepreneurial endeavors.
In an exciting addition, employment fairs are now being held alongside the Mela, providing greater job opportunities for Divyangjan. Of the 1,400 participants screened so far, 370 were shortlisted, with over 100 receiving job offers.
Following the successful organization of 19 previous Melas, this event aims to showcase the talents and entrepreneurial skills of Divyangjan. Each fair prioritizes local artisans, with this Pune edition spotlighting the region’s own Divyang entrepreneurs.
Visitors can explore over 60 stalls featuring handmade goods, enjoy diverse culinary offerings, and experience vibrant cultural performances by Divyang artists from 6 PM to 9 PM daily. The Mela runs until October 6, 2024, with free entry for all. The closing day will feature a special performance titled “Divya Kalashakti,” showcasing the remarkable talents of Divyang artists.
The Divya Kala Mela exemplifies the government’s efforts to economically empower Divyangjan, helping them become self-reliant entrepreneurs and skilled craftsmen. This initiative not only promotes their work but also paves the way for global recognition of their abilities.
