Historic Spiti Marathon 2024: A High-Altitude Challenge in the Himalayas.

The first-ever High Altitude Marathon in Spiti Valley, organized by the Indian Army under Operation Sadbhavana, took place on September 28-29, 2024. The event attracted approximately 640 participants, including locals and distinguished runners from across India, showcasing the region’s cultural richness and promoting sustainable development as part of the Indian government’s Vibrant Village Program.

The marathon featured four categories, with standout performances from various competitors. Jigmet Namgyal from Ladakh Police clinched the title in the men’s 77 KM Spiti Avengers Challenge, while Tenzin Dolma emerged victorious in the women’s category. In the 42 KM full marathon, Naik Het Ram of the Indian Army and Disket Dolma took the top honors for their respective genders.

Other notable winners included Testan Namgyal and Tashi Ladol in the half marathon, and Sonam Stanzin and Sonam Zangpo in the 10 KM race. Hony Captain (Retd) Suresh claimed first place in the 40+ age group, alongside Naib Subedar Shyam Singh and Rakhee Rai in the veteran category.

Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, GOC-in-C Surya Command, celebrated the spirit and resilience of all participants, congratulating them for conquering the majestic Himalayas.

Gaurav Schimar from the Snow Marathon Team praised the initiative, stating, “The Spiti Marathon is a gift from the Indian Army to nature and the mountain-loving running community, honoring the land and its people.” He emphasized that the event has positioned Spiti Valley among the world’s top high-altitude long-distance running circuits.

Participants expressed their appreciation for the Indian Army’s efforts in organizing this historic event and called for the marathon to become an annual tradition. The Spiti Marathon not only highlights the beauty of the region but also aims to boost tourism and create livelihood opportunities for local communities.
