Historic Turnout Marks Conclusion of J&K Assembly Elections: A New Era of Democracy.
Kashmir:
Polling for the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections concluded on Tuesday, showcasing a remarkable voter turnout of 65.58% in the final phase, surpassing the records of the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year. The elections, held in a peaceful and festive atmosphere, symbolize a significant resurgence of democratic participation in a region long affected by violence and militancy.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar highlighted the elections as a “deepening of democracy,” emphasizing the commitment of the people of J&K to the electoral process. With no repolls and no major incidents of violence reported, this election cycle marked a stark contrast to previous years, when numerous disturbances were commonplace.
Over the course of three phases, a total of 90 Assembly Constituencies were contested, reflecting a substantial increase in the electorate by approximately 23% since the last assembly elections in 2014. Notably, the number of women candidates rose significantly, further enriching the political landscape.
The Commission’s meticulous planning ensured a smooth electoral process, with robust security measures in place to foster voter confidence. Special provisions were made for marginalized groups, including a home-voting facility for elderly and disabled individuals, allowing them to participate comfortably.
In regions historically known for boycotts and unrest, such as Pulwama and Shopian, voter turnout increased dramatically, signaling a shift towards greater political engagement. The establishment of polling stations in remote areas, including those near the Line of Control, further underscored the commitment to inclusivity.
As the counting of votes is set for October 8, 2024, these elections are heralded as a pivotal moment in Jammu & Kashmir’s democratic journey, potentially paving the way for a more stable and participatory political future.
