UNICEF Condemns Child Fatality and Arrests During Saba Saba Protests in Kenya.

Nairobi:

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed deep sorrow and concern over the recent loss of life and the reported mistreatment of children during the Saba Saba protests held across Kenya. In a heartfelt statement released today, UNICEF extended its condolences to all families affected by the violence, particularly highlighting the tragic death of a young girl who was fatally struck by a stray bullet while inside her home.

“We especially extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family of a young girl who was tragically killed by a stray bullet while in her own home,” the agency said. The child, whose identity has not yet been disclosed for privacy reasons, is believed to have been caught in the crossfire during clashes between protesters and law enforcement officers.

UNICEF also raised serious concerns over reports indicating that children were among those arrested during the nationwide demonstrations. The Saba Saba protests, held annually on July 7 to mark the push for democratic reforms in Kenya, saw renewed intensity this year, with thousands taking to the streets to demand government accountability, economic reforms, and greater political freedoms.

“UNICEF is deeply concerned by reports of children being arrested during the protests,” the organization stated. “Children must be protected from harm at all times and under all circumstances. It is their fundamental right.”

Human rights organizations in Kenya have also condemned the excessive use of force by police, which reportedly included the use of live ammunition, tear gas, and the arbitrary detention of minors.

UNICEF has called on Kenyan authorities to uphold the rights and safety of all children, regardless of the political climate. The agency urged the government to conduct transparent investigations into the death of the young girl and to ensure that any children in custody are released and supported appropriately.

“As an agency committed to the protection and well-being of children, UNICEF calls on all stakeholders to ensure that the rights of children are never compromised during times of civil unrest,” the statement concluded.

The incident has sparked nationwide debate and drawn international attention to the handling of public protests in Kenya, with calls for police accountability and reform intensifying in the wake of the tragedy.
