Uttarakhand government introduced UCC Bill, registration must for live in couples.

Uttarakhand government led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami tabled the Uniform Civil Code Bill (UCC) in the state legislative assembly on on February 6, 2024.

This bill proposes a common law on marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance for all citizens irrespective of their religion in the state. The bill excludes the Scheduled Tribes.

The Uttarakhand Cabinet gave its approval to the draft of the UCC on February 4. The proposed UCC aims to establish uniform civil laws applicable to all communities within the state.

Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Union Minister for Law and Justice, said that the UCC Bill aims to establish a consistent legal framework for marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws, regardless of religious affiliation.

“According to this Bill, also registration of live-in relationships will be mandatory. Children born of live-in relationships will be considered legitimate and deserted women will be entitled to maintenance from their partners” he added.

“According to the UCC Bill, a person providing false information in his or her statement on a live-in relationship to the Registrar will be fined with a hefty amount and may also be awarded imprisonment of up to three months” the Minister said.
