Mandi Residents Protest Indoor Stadium Proposal at Paddal ground with Hunger Strike at Seri Chanani in Mandi.
Shimla:
Members of the Panna Lal Raksha Memorial Charitable Trust in Mandi have launched a symbolic hunger strike today at Seri Chanani to protest the proposed construction of an indoor stadium at Paddal Ground in Mandi district. The protestors, led by Trust President Rajesh Kapoor, emphasized that while they are not against the idea of building an indoor stadium, they believe Paddal Ground is an unsuitable location for such a project.
Rajesh Kapoor explained, ” Local MLA Anil Sharma is keen to construct indoor stadium at Paddal Ground, which is a historical and culturally significant site, used not only during the weeklong Shivaratri fair but also regularly by local residents to maintain their fitness. Its open space is already vital for the community, and building an indoor stadium would congest it, leading to the loss of an important public resource.” Kapoor further stated that the Trust is calling for the construction of the indoor stadium at a more appropriate site, one that would serve the needs of both the local population and future generations.
The proposed site has drawn criticism, particularly from local residents who argue that the lack of open spaces in Mandi city makes Paddal Ground even more valuable. The protestors are urging local MLA Anil Sharma to reconsider his decision and select another location for the stadium, ensuring that Paddal remains preserved for future generations.
In addition to the stadium issue, the protestors are also advocating for the restoration of the Sakodi Bus Stop, which serves 21 rural panchayats in the region. The bus stop, a key access point for those traveling to Mandi city, was relocated to a less convenient and unsafe location, sparking further discontent. Despite protests from local residents, their concerns have not been addressed by the authorities, said Kapoor.
Kapoor concluded by calling on residents to join the protest and raise their voices against the decisions they believe are detrimental to the community. “We are not against development, but we cannot allow Paddal Ground to be destroyed. We ask the MLA Anil Sharma to reconsider his decision and ensure that the interests of the people are prioritized,” he said.
The protest is expected to continue until the demands for a more suitable site for the indoor stadium and the restoration of the Sakodi Bus Stop are addressed.
