Lahaul and Spiti Police Issue Safety Advisory for Hazardous Sansari-Killar-Thirot-Tandi Road.
Shimla:
The Lahaul and Spiti Police have issued a critical safety advisory for travellers using the Sansari-Killar-Thirot-Tandi (SKTT) road in the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti, urging caution due to continuous sliding and shooting stones along the route, particularly near Kadu Nala, located approximately 84 km from Lahaul.
The advisory highlights the increasing hazards posed by landslides and stone slides on this vital road, which connects Lahaul with the remote areas of Killar and extends into Chamba district. The situation has worsened with the winter season, and the authorities are concerned about the potential dangers for both vehicles and pedestrians. The area is particularly susceptible to stone slides that can be difficult to detect after dark, making it especially perilous during the evening hours.
In light of the continuous threat, the police have strongly recommended that travellers refrain from unnecessary travel on the SKTT road after 5 pm. This precaution is being taken as the risk of sliding stones and landslides significantly increases after sunset, making it difficult for drivers and pedestrians to spot potential dangers in the reduced visibility.
Lahaul and Spiti’s Superintendent of Police (SP), Mayank Chaudhary, has assured the public that all safety measures are being implemented to mitigate the risks. He further urged travellers to stay informed about the weather conditions and the road status before beginning their journey. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure that safety protocols are maintained and to reduce any risks to those passing through this challenging terrain.
The SKTT road, crucial for connecting Lahaul to the more isolated regions of Killar, Thirot, and Tandi, is no stranger to natural disturbances, particularly during the winter months when the conditions worsen. The police and local authorities have been working together to safeguard residents and tourists as they navigate through this treacherous area.
The Lahaul and Spiti Police strongly advise travellers to plan their journeys during daylight hours and to avoid travel after 5 pm to reduce the risk of encountering dangerous conditions on the road. The advisory is part of an ongoing effort to ensure the safety of those travelling in this remote and often unpredictable region.
