New Delhi:
The Election Commission has announced that the Delhi Assembly elections will be held on February 5, 2025, for all 70 Assembly constituencies in the National Capital Region. The voting will take place in a single phase, and the counting of votes will be conducted on February 8, 2025.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, in a statement on Tuesday, outlined the election schedule. The notification for the election will be issued on January 10, 2025, with the last date for filing nominations set for January 17, 2025. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on January 18, and candidates will have until January 20, 2025, to withdraw their nominations.
With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has come into effect and will remain in place until the conclusion of the election process to ensure fairness and transparency.
The last Delhi Assembly elections were held on February 8, 2020, and the current term of the Delhi government is set to end on February 23, 2025.
The upcoming election will witness a fierce contest between three major political parties: the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress. The AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, currently holds 62 of the 70 Assembly seats, while the BJP holds the remaining eight seats. The Congress failed to secure any seats in the 2020 elections.
