Strong Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Leaving At Least 126 Dead and Over 400 Rescued.
Tibet:
A powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake has devastated Tibet, claiming at least 126 lives and leaving widespread destruction in its wake. The quake struck on Tuesday, about 50 miles from the base of Mount Everest, near Tingri county. More than 14,000 rescue workers have been deployed to the remote area to search for survivors, with over 400 people rescued so far, according to Chinese state media.
The earthquake caused massive damage, with over 3,600 buildings reported as collapsed. Thousands of people are without shelter, and efforts to locate and assist survivors are being hindered by harsh winter temperatures, which have dropped as low as -16C. Videos released by state media show scenes of devastation in Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city, where buildings were reduced to rubble. Rescue teams have been working through the debris, distributing blankets and providing aid to those affected.
Tibet, located along a major geological fault line, is no stranger to earthquakes, but this is one of the deadliest in recent years. The tremors were also felt in neighboring Nepal and parts of India, but no significant damage or casualties have been reported there. In Tibet, nearly 30,000 people have been relocated, and essential services, such as electricity and mobile networks in Tingri county, were restored by Wednesday.
Rescue operations are continuing, with the air force and drones assisting the efforts. President Xi Jinping has called for urgent measures to minimize casualties and support displaced residents. The area, a popular base for Mount Everest climbers, has seen tours canceled, and visitors have been moved to safe outdoor areas.
The Dalai Lama, currently living in exile in India, expressed his condolences for the victims, offering prayers for those affected by the tragedy. The region’s spiritual heart, Shigatse, is also the seat of the Panchen Lama, an important figure in Tibetan Buddhism.
