Union Minister Unveils Telecom Security and Connectivity Initiatives to Empower Citizens and Drive Digital Transformation.
New Delhi:
In a significant move towards enhancing telecom security and connectivity across India, the Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, launched a range of citizen-centric initiatives today. These include the Sanchar Saathi Mobile App, the National Broadband Mission (NBM) 2.0, and the inauguration of Intra Circle Roaming at DBN Funded 4G Mobile Sites.
Sanchar Saathi Mobile App: A Step Towards Telecom Security for All
The Sanchar Saathi Mobile App, launched during the event, is designed to provide essential telecom security tools directly to citizens. Available on both Android and iOS platforms, the app aims to empower users to protect themselves from telecom fraud. Key features include:
Chakshu: Allows users to report suspected fraudulent communications like calls and SMS.
Know Mobile Connections in Your Name: Users can track all mobile connections registered under their name to prevent unauthorized usage.
Block Lost or Stolen Handsets: Provides a quick way to block, trace, and recover lost or stolen mobile devices.
Verify Handset Authenticity: Offers an easy way to confirm the genuineness of mobile devices before purchasing.
With over 90 crore smartphone users in India, this app is expected to be a crucial tool in maintaining a secure and trustworthy telecom ecosystem for all citizens.
National Broadband Mission (NBM) 2.0: Transforming India’s Digital Infrastructure
The Union Minister also launched NBM 2.0, an ambitious initiative aimed at furthering India’s digital transformation. Building on the success of NBM 1.0, which saw the establishment of nearly 8 lakh towers and a surge in broadband subscriptions, NBM 2.0 sets a target to connect 1.7 lakh unconnected villages by 2030.
With a vision to provide high-speed broadband to rural India, NBM 2.0 aims to improve broadband speeds from 63.55 Mbps to 100 Mbps by 2030. The mission also aims to achieve 95% operational uptime for optical fiber cables across 2.7 lakh villages and increase rural internet subscriptions significantly by 2030.
Additionally, the mission includes fostering digital inclusion by expanding broadband connectivity to institutions like schools, healthcare centers, and panchayats, and supporting the implementation of 5G and future 6G networks across the country.
Intra Circle Roaming at DBN-Funded 4G Mobile Sites: Expanding Connectivity in Rural Areas
In a move aimed at improving telecom services in remote areas, the Minister inaugurated Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) at DBN-funded 4G mobile sites. This initiative allows subscribers from multiple telecom service providers to use the same 4G tower, eliminating the need for multiple towers for different providers.
This development will offer seamless 4G connectivity to over 35,400 rural and remote villages, enhancing the telecom experience for millions of subscribers. The ICR initiative also fosters collaboration between telecom service providers, including BSNL, Airtel, and Reliance, maximizing the use of existing infrastructure to serve rural populations more efficiently.
Strengthening Digital Security and Combatting Cybercrime
As part of the event, Scindia highlighted the success of the Sanchar Saathi Portal, which has been instrumental in combating cybercrimes. Launched in May 2023, the portal has seen over 9 crore visits, disconnection of 2.75 crore fraudulent connections, and the recovery of over 25 lakh lost or stolen devices. The government has also introduced systems to prevent spoofed international calls, effectively blocking 90% of such calls in just two months.
These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of telecom networks, which are vital for fostering a digitally inclusive and secure India.
A Vision for a Connected and Empowered India
In his address, the Union Minister emphasized that these initiatives are key to realizing the vision of a “Viksit Bharat”—an India that is empowered by technology, connectivity, and innovation. The launch of the Sanchar Saathi App, NBM 2.0, and Intra Circle Roaming at DBN-funded 4G sites marks a major step toward building a connected and secure digital ecosystem, driving the country’s journey toward becoming a global leader in digital and telecom sectors.
As these initiatives unfold, they are set to transform India’s digital landscape, providing citizens with improved access to services, enhanced security, and greater opportunities for growth in the digital era.
