3rd India-Japan Steel Dialogue Held to Enhance Bilateral Cooperation in Steel Sector.
New Delhi:
The 3rd India-Japan Steel Dialogue was successfully organized at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. The event was jointly hosted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), Japan, and the Ministry of Steel, India, with a view to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the steel industry.
The dialogue was co-chaired by Vinod Kumar Tripathi, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, and Hideyuki Urata, Deputy Director General of METI, Japan, who led their respective delegations. The discussions were wide-ranging, focusing on key areas such as economic developments in both countries, trends in the global steel market, and the ongoing status of steel trade between India and Japan.
One of the major points raised by the Indian delegation was the government’s focus on enhancing the ease of doing business, alongside strategic initiatives to boost demand for steel, especially driven by infrastructure investments. The Indian government highlighted its commitment to sustainability, citing steps like the release of the Green Steel Report and the introduction of the Taxonomy of Green Steel. These efforts align with India’s broader objectives to promote innovation and research in the steel sector, creating significant opportunities for Japanese investments.
The dialogue also provided a platform to discuss global steel industry challenges, notably the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (EU CBAM), which poses a significant impact on international steel trade. Both sides exchanged perspectives on this issue and its broader implications.
A key highlight of the meeting was the progress review of ongoing capacity-building initiatives. Both nations discussed ways to enhance technology collaboration and skill development. The Japanese delegation assured continued support for investments in new steel technologies in India. In return, India reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a favorable business environment for Japanese companies, facilitating further growth in the sector.
The India-Japan Steel Dialogue is an important institutional mechanism for fostering cooperation in areas such as steel production, product diversification, and workplace safety. It builds on the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on the steel sector, signed between India and Japan on December 22, 2020. This partnership reflects the shared vision of both nations to advance innovation, sustainable growth, and resilience in the global steel industry.
