Shimla:

In a strategic move aimed at boosting policing efficiency and enhancing public safety, the Himachal Pradesh Government has announced the categorization of all 135 police stations across the state into six distinct categories. The decision, directed by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, is intended to improve law enforcement services by aligning police station resources with varying crime patterns, geographical challenges, and other critical factors.

The police stations will be classified into six categories—A+ to E—based on key considerations such as population density, geographical area, frequency of major crimes, VIP movement, traffic volume, proximity to inter-state borders, and the influx of tourists. This initiative will help in the targeted deployment of resources and personnel, enhancing both law enforcement and service delivery.

Under this new classification system, police stations registering over 250 cases annually will be categorized as A+, with 15 stations across the state falling under this top-tier category. Other categories are as follows: 5 stations will be categorized under A, 25 under B, 47 under C, 28 under D, and 15 under E.

As part of this categorization, the allocation of police personnel will be tailored to each station’s workload. A+ category stations will be allocated a minimum of 70 personnel, while A category stations will have 65, B category 48, C category 37, D category 25, and E category 19. Additionally, the number of investigating officers at each station will be determined by the volume of First Information Report (FIR) registrations.

Chief Minister Sukhu has instructed the Police Department to ensure that postings and staffing levels are adjusted in line with this new system, aimed at maintaining a uniform distribution of manpower and enhancing crime control efforts across the state. This move is expected to not only streamline operations but also strengthen the state’s overall policing framework, offering improved safety and service to the public.

The new categorization is anticipated to bring a more strategic approach to policing, ensuring that resources are better allocated based on the demands of each region, ultimately leading to more effective crime prevention and quicker response times for the people of Himachal Pradesh.
