Shimla:

Dr. Jagdish Sharma, a prominent figure in social service, history, and cultural preservation, has spent over four decades dedicated to safeguarding the archaeological and cultural heritage of Pangana and the Suket state in Himachal Pradesh. Born on November 15, 1958, to Pandit Matidhar Sharma, a social activist, Dr. Sharma chose a path of service over government work, focusing on preserving the rich cultural heritage of his region.

With a degree in Ayurveda, Dr. Sharma could have pursued a medical career but instead dedicated himself to social causes. He became a key figure in raising social awareness and promoting literacy in remote areas of Mandi district during the 1990s, challenging outdated traditions and spreading cultural consciousness. His efforts extended to the preservation of local folk culture and literature, where he conducted extensive research on customs, folk art, and the architectural history of temples in the Suket region.

In the late 1990s, Dr. Sharma established the Suket Culture, Literature, and Welfare Forum, providing a platform for the promotion of Suket-Mandi’s folk traditions. His research has made him a respected scholar, and his work is now a subject of study for students at various universities. Dr. Sharma’s advocacy played a significant role in Pangana being granted the status of a sub-tehsil by the Himachal Pradesh government.

His contributions to infrastructure development include facilitating the construction of playgrounds, school facilities, and cultural centers in schools like the Government Senior Secondary School in Pangana. He has also organized blood donation and eye care camps and promoted environmental awareness through tree plantation drives.

Dr. Sharma’s dedication has earned him numerous awards, including the “Swargiya Chandramani Kashyap State Archaeology Award” and recognition for his work with the Ashirwad Youth Mandal Pangana. His lifelong efforts to uplift society and preserve cultural heritage serve as an inspiring example of selfless service.
