UNICEF Urges Immediate Ceasefire as Violence in Syria’s Coastal Areas Claims the Lives of 13 Children.
AMMAN:
UNICEF has expressed deep concern over the recent spike in violence across Syria’s coastal regions, which has tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 13 children, including a six-month-old baby. The ongoing escalation of hostilities has also led to numerous civilian casualties, injuries, and the displacement of thousands of families, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region. Additionally, critical infrastructure has been severely damaged, including vital facilities such as hospitals.
In response to the escalating violence, UNICEF has reiterated the United Nations Secretary-General’s urgent call for all parties involved to exercise restraint and take immediate action to prevent further loss of life. The international organization emphasized the need for a swift end to hostilities and full adherence to International Humanitarian Law and international human rights law, which mandate the protection of civilians in conflict zones.
UNICEF also stressed the importance of protecting essential civilian infrastructure, such as healthcare facilities, which are critical for the well-being of the population. The organization called for unhindered access for humanitarian workers to deliver life-saving services to those affected by the violence.
As the violence continues to take a heavy toll on Syria’s children, UNICEF has urged all parties to prioritize dialogue and work towards a peaceful political transition. “The children of Syria have already endured immense suffering. They have the right to live in peace and to hope for a better future,” the organization stated in its appeal.
The recent surge in violence underscores the urgent need for all parties to uphold their legal obligations under international law and to ensure that civilians, particularly children, are afforded the protection they need in the face of ongoing conflict. UNICEF continues to call for a long-term commitment to peace and reconciliation in Syria, offering hope for a brighter future for the country’s youngest generation.
