NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Gang Rape on Gopalpur Sea Beach.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu cognizance of a heinous gang rape incident on the Gopalpur sea beach in Odisha’s Ganjam District. A 20-year-old female college student was allegedly subjected to gang rape by around 10 men on June 15, 2025, while she was celebrating a festival with a male friend.

NHRC Issues Notices to State Authorities

The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Odisha, seeking a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. The report is expected to include:

– Status of the investigation
– Victim’s health and medical examination
– Compensation/counseling provided to the victim

Investigation Underway

The victim has been sent to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for medical examination. The police have detained seven suspects in connection with the case.

NHRC’s Concern

The NHRC has observed that the incident, if true, raises serious concerns about human rights violations. The Commission’s action underscores the need for swift and effective action to ensure justice for the victim.
