Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister’s Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today flagged off a 60-member contingent from the state that will participate in the upcoming National Ice Skating Championship, scheduled to be held in Dehradun from 25th to 28th June 2025. The flag-off ceremony took place at the Chief Minister’s official residence, Oak Over, in Shimla.

The contingent, comprising young athletes from various districts of the state, will compete in seven different age-wise categories in the prestigious national event. On the occasion, the Chief Minister extended his best wishes to the participants and congratulated them on International Olympics Day, encouraging them to bring laurels to the state.

Speaking at the event, CM Sukhu reiterated the state government’s commitment to promoting sports and nurturing athletic talent. He highlighted various initiatives undertaken by his government to support sportspersons, including significant enhancements in prize money for international medal winners from the state, covering events such as the Olympics, Paralympics, and Asian Games.

“In addition to boosting monetary incentives, we are also improving infrastructure and logistics for our athletes,” the Chief Minister said. “To make travel more convenient, athletes now receive AC three-tier train fare support for journeys up to 200 kilometers and economy class airfare for longer distances.”

He further added that such measures not only aim to foster greater participation in sports but also serve as a tool for social change, helping youth embrace healthy lifestyles and steer clear of drug abuse.

The Chief Minister emphasized that these steps are part of a broader vision to position Himachal Pradesh as a hub for winter and adventure sports, leveraging its unique topography and climate.

President of the Himachal Pradesh Ice Skating Association, District Shimla, Mr. Ikashwaku Justa, and District Vice President Mr. Yogesh Sihea were also present at the ceremony. They expressed gratitude to the state government for its continued support and encouragement to winter sports in the region.

The state contingent is expected to make a strong showing at the championship, with players having undergone rigorous training over the past few months. Enthusiasm among the participants was high, as they gear up to represent Himachal Pradesh on the national stage.
