Cloudburst in Khurik Village Causes Widespread Damage; Former Minister Dr. Ram Lal Markanda Demands Swift Government Action.
Shimla:
A devastating cloudburst struck Khurik village in the Spiti Valley of Lahaul and Spiti district on Tuesday, causing significant destruction to homes and standing crops, further intensifying the challenges faced by the remote high-altitude community. The sudden deluge triggered flash floods that swept through parts of the village, damaging property and farmlands.
Former Minister Dr. Ram Lal Markanda expressed deep concern over the situation and called on the Himachal Pradesh government to act swiftly. “There has been considerable damage to people’s homes and crops due to the cloudburst in Khurik village. I urge the government to immediately assess the situation and ensure appropriate compensation for the affected families,” he said in a statement.
Local authorities, including SDM Shikha Simtia—who also holds the charge of Additional Deputy Commissioner—have confirmed their presence at the site and are leading ongoing relief efforts. The administration is working to provide immediate assistance and evaluate the full extent of the damage.
The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of Spiti and other Himalayan regions to extreme weather events, underlining the need for better disaster preparedness. Residents and leaders alike are urging the state government to expedite relief measures and long-term support for the affected community.
