In a powerful stride toward gender equality and grassroots sports development, the Khelo India ASMITA Football League 2025–26 was officially inaugurated today by  Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, at the Godavari Engineering College Ground in Jalgaon, Maharashtra.

The initiative marks a significant milestone in the government’s mission to increase women’s participation in sports and promote inclusivity through affirmative action. The launch event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of girls under 13 years of age, signaling a renewed focus on nurturing young female talent from underrepresented communities.

“A Powerful Step Towards Empowerment”: Raksha Khadse

In her keynote address, Raksha Khadse emphasized the transformative vision behind the ASMITA league.

“Khelo India ASMITA is not just a football league — it is affirmative action in motion. It brings aspiring girls, especially from tribal, rural, and minority backgrounds, right into the spotlight. This is where passion turns into performance,” she said.

She described the initiative as a “powerful step towards empowerment” and a vital component of the ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ philosophy, ensuring that sports becomes a vehicle of progress for all segments of society.

Breaking Stereotypes, Building Futures

The ASMITA (Aspiring Women in Sports: Mission for Inclusion, Training & Action) Football League is part of the broader Khelo Bharat Niti, a government strategy to use sports as a nation-building tool. This league, specifically for young girls, is designed to address historical imbalances in sports participation and provide a level playing field for emerging female athletes.

“This league isn’t just about scoring goals — it’s about breaking barriers, reshaping mindsets, and building role models,” Khadse remarked.

The platform allows first-time players, grassroots talents, and hidden champions to showcase their skills, while also gaining access to structured training, mentoring, and pathways for national-level representation.

Institutional Support and Community Engagement

The inauguration ceremony was attended by key dignitaries including Ketakitai Patil and Farukh Shaikh, Secretary of the Jalgaon District Football Association, alongside members of the Godavari Engineering College administration.

The event was conducted under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, with robust support from the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the All India Football Federation (AIFF), and the Western India Football Association (WIFA). This highlights the collaborative effort at the national, state, and district levels to drive sustainable change in women’s sports.

Aligning with PM Modi’s Vision of a Sporting India

The ASMITA league aligns seamlessly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a global sporting powerhouse — one where women are not just participants but central figures in the country’s sporting success story.

The initiative also aims to develop a sports culture at the grassroots, where young girls are encouraged to dream big, break free from societal stereotypes, and become future champions and role models for the nation.

Looking Ahead: A Legacy in the Making

With hundreds of girls participating from across Maharashtra in the inaugural season, the Khelo India ASMITA Football League is expected to expand across states in the coming months, creating a nationwide pipeline of skilled female athletes. Plans are already underway to introduce similar leagues in other disciplines including athletics, wrestling, and hockey under the ASMITA banner.
