PM Modi, Xi Jinping Hold Bilateral Meeting, Discuss Border Peace, Trade and Long-Term India-China Relations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 12 on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, with the two leaders reviewing the progress in India-China bilateral relations and discussing key issues including border peace, trade, economic cooperation and people-to-people ties.
The meeting came as the two countries noted steady progress in bilateral relations since the leaders’ previous meeting in Tianjin in August 2025. Both leaders emphasized the importance of adopting a strategic and long-term perspective towards India-China relations and agreed that differences between the two countries should not be allowed to develop into disputes.
Prime Minister Modi stressed that the relationship should be guided by three key principles — mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.
Border Peace Remains Key Priority
A major focus of the discussions was peace and tranquility along the India-China border. Prime Minister Modi underlined that maintaining peace in the border areas remains an essential basis for the continued development of bilateral relations.
He emphasized the importance of both sides adhering to existing agreements and understandings concerning border-related issues. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question, taking into account the broader political perspective of bilateral relations and the long-term interests of the people of both countries.
Focus on People-to-People Relations
The leaders also reviewed progress in people-to-people contacts and agreed on the need to further strengthen ties between the two countries.
They underscored the importance of promoting cultural exchanges, business linkages and greater mobility between India and China. The two sides also discussed ways to facilitate stronger interactions between their peoples and expand areas of cooperation.
Trade and Economic Issues Discussed
Economic and trade relations also figured prominently in the meeting. Both leaders stressed the need to address concerns on both sides, particularly issues related to the structural trade imbalance and supply chains.
They also emphasized the importance of facilitating meaningful and predictable market access, which could contribute to more balanced and sustainable economic relations between the two countries.
Cooperation on Regional and Global Issues
Prime Minister Modi and President Xi agreed that India and China should continue working towards expanding common ground on regional and global issues and cooperate in addressing emerging challenges.
The discussions reflected the shared understanding that greater dialogue and engagement between the two countries can contribute to stability and cooperation at the regional and global levels.
China Supports India’s BRICS Chairship
Prime Minister Modi also appreciated China’s support for India’s BRICS chairship and acknowledged its contribution to the successful conduct of the BRICS Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
The meeting marked another important engagement between the Indian and Chinese leadership as the two countries seek to consolidate recent progress in bilateral relations while continuing dialogue on outstanding issues, particularly the boundary question and economic concerns.
