PM Modi Celebrates Six Years of Jal Jeevan Mission: Over 15 Crore Households Now Have Access to Clean Drinking Water.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today marked the sixth anniversary of the Jal Jeevan Mission, hailing it as a transformative initiative that has successfully provided clean and safe drinking water to over 15 crore rural households across India through individual tap connections.

Launched on 15 August 2019, the Jal Jeevan Mission has emerged as a flagship programme under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aimed at ensuring “Har Ghar Jal” — safe and adequate drinking water for every rural household. Over the past six years, the mission has dramatically reshaped water access in villages, directly impacting health, sanitation, and quality of life, particularly for women and children.

A Milestone in Rural Empowerment

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi reflected on the milestone, stating:

“We mark #6YearsOfJalJeevanMission, a scheme that focuses on dignity and transforming lives. It has also ensured better healthcare, especially for our Nari Shakti.”

The Prime Minister also shared visuals showcasing the impact of the scheme, emphasizing how access to tap water has brought dignity, convenience, and improved health outcomes to rural families. The reduction in water-borne diseases and the time saved for women and girls—previously spent fetching water—are among the most notable social gains.

Key Achievements:

  • 15+ crore rural households now have functional household tap connections.
  • All villages in multiple states and UTs have achieved 100% tap water coverage.
  • Significant improvements in infant and maternal health due to availability of clean drinking water.
  • Empowerment of women and girls through reduced burden of water collection.
  • Training and engagement of local water committees and women-led groups to ensure sustainable water management.

Focus on Health and Women Empowerment

One of the mission’s central pillars has been improving healthcare through better water availability. Clean drinking water has led to a reduction in diarrhoeal diseases, improved nutrition, and enhanced hygiene in rural schools and Anganwadi centres.

Prime Minister Modi reiterated that India’s Nari Shakti has been among the biggest beneficiaries, as the scheme has not only saved time and effort but also empowered women to engage in education and livelihood opportunities.

Vision Ahead

With the goal of achieving universal coverage, the government continues to invest in infrastructure, monitoring systems, and community participation to ensure long-term sustainability of the water supply. The next phase will focus on quality monitoring, grey water management, and capacity building at the grassroots level.

As the country prepares to celebrate Independence Day, the Prime Minister’s message highlights how initiatives like Jal Jeevan Mission symbolize the vision of inclusive development and true Swaraj — where every citizen has access to basic necessities and dignity of life.
