The traditional and much-celebrated three-day state-level Ladarcha Fair was inaugurated yesterday in Spiti’s Kaza with grand festivities and cultural fervor. Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul-Spiti, Kiran Bhadana, presided over the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest, officially opening the event with the ceremonial lighting of a lamp at the feet of Lord Buddha.

The inauguration began with a grand traditional procession from Kaza Gompa to the Ladarcha Mela Ground. The procession featured vibrant local participation, with hundreds of people dressed in traditional Spitian attire, accompanied by traditional musical instruments. Monks (Lamagans and Chomogans) from various monasteries, local women’s groups, students from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Lari, and numerous residents added to the cultural splendor.

Speaking on the occasion, DC Kiran Bhadana extended her heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the people, stating that fairs and festivals are vital expressions of our rich cultural heritage. “Ladarcha is one of the oldest traditional fairs of Himachal Pradesh, and it has played a significant role in preserving and promoting cultural exchanges in the region,” she said.

She highlighted that the origin of the Ladarcha Fair dates back centuries, beginning as a traditional trade fair in the Ladarcha Ground near Chicham village. Over time, it transitioned to the Government Senior Secondary School campus in Kaza, and today it is celebrated at the Kaza Cricket Ground.

“Fairs like Ladarcha not only serve as platforms for social interaction and cultural exchange but also give a significant boost to local trade and tourism. Importantly, they offer an opportunity for the younger generations to connect with and understand their cultural roots,” she added.

Bhadana also emphasized that the cultural evenings organized during such festivals not only preserve traditional art forms but also offer a source of entertainment for both locals and tourists, enhancing the festive spirit.

During the event, the DC also visited developmental exhibitions set up by various departments, along with stalls by women self-help groups and local artisans, appreciating their efforts and products.

The Mela Committee, led by Acting ADC and Fair Committee Chairperson Shikha Simtia, warmly welcomed the chief guest with traditional Spitian honors, including a shawl, traditional cap, a souvenir, Thangka painting, and a statue of Lord Buddha.

In a symbolic gesture, the chief guest honored TAC members, the head of Kaza Panchayat, and Lamagans and Chomogans from different monasteries by presenting them with ceremonial Khatas and tokens of prosperity.

Shikha Simtia thanked the Deputy Commissioner for inaugurating the fair and shared details of the various activities and cultural programs scheduled over the next three days.

Also present on the occasion were District Youth President and TAC Member Kesang Rapchik, TAC Members Sonam Targe and Veer Bhagat, Kaza Gram Panchayat Pradhan Sonam Dolma, DSP Ajay Bhardwaj, BDO Anshul, and officials from multiple departments along with other dignitaries.

The Ladarcha Fair continues to serve as a living testament to Spiti’s vibrant cultural legacy, drawing locals and visitors alike into a celebration of tradition, spirituality, and community spirit.
