PM Modi Meets Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing on Sidelines of SCO Summit, Reaffirms India’s Commitment to Regional Stability and Cooperation.
Tianjin:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission of Myanmar, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin on Sunday.
During the high-level engagement, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that Myanmar holds a key position in India’s strategic outreach, being an integral part of the Neighborhood First, Act East, and Indo-Pacific policies.
The two leaders conducted a comprehensive review of bilateral relations, covering a wide range of issues including:
- Development partnership
- Defence and security cooperation
- Border management
- Cross-border trade and connectivity
Prime Minister Modi highlighted that the expeditious progress of ongoing connectivity projects—including roadways and border infrastructure—would enhance people-to-people interaction, improve trade linkages, and bolster regional cooperation as envisioned in India’s Act East policy.

Addressing the internal political landscape of Myanmar, the Prime Minister expressed hope that the upcoming elections in Myanmar will be conducted in a fair, inclusive, and transparent manner, involving all stakeholders. He reaffirmed India’s consistent position in supporting a Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned peace process, stating that dialogue and consultation remain the only viable path to achieving lasting peace and stability in the country.
Prime Minister Modi further reiterated India’s continued commitment to support the developmental aspirations of the people of Myanmar, noting that New Delhi is ready to provide assistance in areas ranging from infrastructure and health to education and capacity building.
The meeting comes at a time when both nations are seeking to strengthen ties amidst changing geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region. India and Myanmar share a 1,643 km-long border, and collaboration on issues such as security, counter-insurgency operations, and trans-border crimes remains critical for both sides.
The engagement at the SCO Summit underlines India’s diplomatic outreach and commitment to fostering peace, stability, and cooperation in Southeast Asia and the broader region.
Further dialogue and high-level visits are expected in the near future as part of efforts to reinforce mutual trust and deepen the India-Myanmar partnership.
