Armed Group Seizes Life-Saving UNICEF Aid in Gaza, Denying Malnourished Children Critical Food Supplies.

Gaza City:

In a deeply alarming incident, armed individuals in Gaza intercepted and commandeered four UNICEF trucks preparing to deliver Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF)—a vital, life-saving nutrition supply for severely malnourished children. The hijacking, which occurred just outside a UNICEF compound in Gaza City, has effectively deprived at least 2,700 children of essential treatment as the region faces worsening famine conditions.

According to UNICEF, the attackers held the drivers at gunpoint, forcibly redirected the food supplies, and later released the drivers and trucks, but without the critical cargo.

“This theft has denied at least 2,700 severely and acutely malnourished children of life-saving RUTF,” UNICEF stated. “Vital supplies at a time when famine has been declared in the north of Gaza and the ongoing military operation is creating further displacement and adding to the devastating impact on children.”

A Lifeline Stolen Amid Famine

Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) is a specially formulated product designed to treat severe acute malnutrition—the deadliest form of hunger. It can be the difference between life and death for children suffering from famine-related starvation.

This food was destined for distribution centers and mobile health teams operating in northern Gaza, where famine has already been officially declared and humanitarian conditions are rapidly deteriorating due to the intensifying military operations and forced displacement of civilians.

Aid Disruption Highlights Humanitarian Breakdown

UNICEF condemned the hijacking in the strongest terms and called on all parties in Gaza to respect humanitarian principles and international law, stressing the urgent need for safe, unhindered access for relief operations.

“UNICEF urges all in Gaza to respect and protect humanitarian aid and uphold international humanitarian law,” the organization said.

This latest incident reflects the growing insecurity and breakdown of humanitarian norms in Gaza, where access to food, water, healthcare, and shelter is severely compromised. Aid agencies have been warning for months that attacks on humanitarian convoys, looting, and insecurity are making it nearly impossible to sustain relief operations.

Children Bear the Brunt

As the conflict deepens, children continue to pay the highest price. Thousands are severely malnourished, many have lost their families, and most are living without access to education, healthcare, or clean water.

“Children are bearing the heaviest burden,” UNICEF said. “Ultimately, a sustainable ceasefire is essential to create an environment where such incidents no longer occur, and aid can reach those who need it most – safely, quickly, and effectively.”

The organization reiterated that only a durable peace agreement and humanitarian ceasefire can allow life-saving aid to reach the most vulnerable without threat or obstruction.

Global Call for Accountability and Protection of Aid

This incident comes amid increasing international scrutiny of how humanitarian operations are being disrupted in conflict zones and has sparked renewed calls for accountability and enforcement of international humanitarian law.

UNICEF and its partners are working to replenish stolen supplies and adapt delivery mechanisms to ensure continued support for Gaza’s most vulnerable populations—but warn that without security guarantees, the risks remain dangerously high.

As famine and conflict escalate, the world watches—and the lives of thousands of children hang in the balance.
