CBI Court in Hyderabad Sentences Two Postal Assistants to Two Years’ Rigorous Imprisonment for Misappropriating Rs. 27.27 Lakh During Demonetisation.

Hyderabad:

In a significant verdict, the CBI Court in Hyderabad on 1 December 2025 convicted and sentenced two Postal Assistants of Humayun Nagar Sub-Post Office, Hyderabad, for misappropriating Rs. 27.27 lakh during the demonetisation period in 2016.

Adapa Srinivas, the then Postal Assistant (Treasurer), and U. Rajyalakshmi, the then Postal Assistant, were each sentenced to undergo two years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and fined Rs. 65,000.

The case, registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on 31 August 2017, arose from a written complaint by the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Hyderabad City Division. The complaint alleged that Srinivas and Rajyalakshmi had entered into a criminal conspiracy between 10 November 2016 and 24 November 2016, during the demonetisation of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 old currency notes.

According to the CBI, the accused fraudulently exchanged withdrawn old series (WOS) currency notes for new currency notes worth Rs. 27,27,397 without obtaining the mandatory Annexure-II forms, and falsified records to conceal their misappropriation.

After completing its investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet against the accused on 25 October 2019. Following the trial, the Court found both Srinivas and Rajyalakshmi guilty and imposed the sentence accordingly.

This conviction underscores the CBI’s commitment to cracking down on corruption and financial fraud within government departments, particularly during critical periods such as demonetisation.
